Celebrating Libraries with Simon Armitage

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Friends of Marsden Library welcomed Simon Armitage, the Poet
Laureate to Marsden to read in his home library. Simon is in the middle section (L-M) of his decade
long tour of UK libraries, using the alphabet as his compass.
Simon Armitage says, “I want to support the under-pressure services that play a vital role in shaping
the cultural, imaginative and intellectual life of this country, and often stand at the core of
communities.”
Simon did two readings (afternoon and evening) from Magnetic Field: The Marsden Poems and
other collections. Both audiences were treated to stories and reflections from Simon’s childhood,
including his memories of enjoying Marsden Library, and his experience of developing his writing
inspired by poets such as Ted Hughes and Elizabeth Bishop as well his family, community and
environment.
Diane Barkley (Chair of Friends of Marsden Library) says, “We were thrilled that Simon offered to do
two readings for us in Marsden Library so that as many people as possible could attend. Being part
of the Laureate’s UK wide library tour is a great privilege. We are honoured to be part of an
initiative that celebrates libraries that Simon describes as the ultimate democratic institution.”
So it’s wonderful to be able to announce the very welcome news that Kirklees MBC has confirmed
its Library Services budget for the year ahead, saving it from proposed cuts in the short-term at least.
