Suffrage Banner by Florence E Lockwood, 1911, copyright Kirklees Museums & Galleries

Florence Lockwood was an artist, suffragist and pacifist. Her memoir paints a vivid picture of the people, politics, communities, and industry of the Colne Valley in the early 20th C, and is the only known autobiography of a Yorkshire suffragist. Florence remained a practicing artist throughout her life and may be best known – in the Huddersfield area at least – for this stunning suffrage banner, ‘Votes for Women, Huddersfield and District’.

We’re delighted to welcome Janette Martin and Rebecca Gill, editors of this new edition of Florence’s memoir, ‘An Ordinary Life’, published by Huddersfield History Society in November 2024, to discuss Florence’s life and work, and to celebrate her achievements this International Women’s Day.
