SUMMARY:Robin Ince: Bibliomaniac
DESCRIPTION:Why play to 12\,000 people when you can play to 12? (or\, ideally\, 40: maximum capacity in Marsden Library!)\nWe’re delighted to have Robin back again this year to talk about the book that came out of his 2021 tour\, Bibliomaniac. \nPacked with witty anecdotes and tall tales\, Bibliomaniac takes the reader on a journey across Britain as Robin explores his lifelong love of bookshops and books (and Libraries\, natch)  – and also tries to find out just why he can never have enough of them. It is the story of an addiction and a romance\, and also of an occasional points failure just outside Oxenholme. \nOur friends at Read in Holmfirth will be along to sell books – and they even feature in Biblbiomaniac having hosted Robin in Holmfirth – and Robin will be happy to sign. \nThis event will take place in our small-but-beautiful\, Library – meaning tickets are strictly limited!  On Sale on Wednesday 5th April from Marsden Mechanics – make a note in your diary! \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Graphic Novelist Jamie Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for an evening with graphic novelist Jamie Rhodes. Jamie will read an extract from his graphic novel\, “A Castle in England” and tell us about the project that inspired it\, in which he spent 4 months living in a National Trust castle creating stories inspired by the objects and documents in its archive\, plunging us into its rich and often dark history. \nAbout Jamie \nJamie Rhodes is a writer and academic working in comics\, books\, TTRPG\, and film. His first book was published in 2014 after he worked with the British Library to write a collection of stories inspired by unusual documents in the library archives. The collection\, Dead Men’s Teeth\, launched with a series of dramatic readings at the British Library‘s Brontë Room. \nA Castle in England is his first graphic novel\, the result of a collaboration with the National Trust as Scotney Castle’s Writer-in-Residence\, writing a graphic novel inspired by the castle’s archive collection. The book was published by Nobrow Press in 2017 and nominated for a prestigious Eisner Award at San Diego Comic Con 2018. \nAfter moving back to West Yorkshire\, Jamie wrote and co-directed an award-winning short film\, Amputee (2020). The film made the official selection of 22 film festivals worldwide and was nominated for Best Short Film at Cannes Shorts. In 2021\, Jamie started his PhD in Philosophy & Creative Writing. He is currently writing his thesis\, Alternate Realities: the Phenomenological Experience of Story Immersion. \nBook Online\, or leave your name at Marsden Library. \nFREE Event\, donations welcome to support Friends of Marsden Library. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Rob Vincent\, 'Colne Valley\, A History of a Pennine Landscape'
DESCRIPTION:Join Rob Vincent in the historic Marsden Mechanics Hall for a talk based on his book ‘Colne Valley: A History of a Pennine Landscape’. \nThis book is a tribute to the visual strengths of the Colne Valley’s landscape and a narrative of its development. It is inspired by the author’s experience of living for over 30 years in a house whose built form reflects the Valley’s centuries-long dual economy of domestic cloth making and small-scale farming\, and whose stones were quarried from the hillside where it stands. From affection for his family home at Harts Hole grew a wider understanding\, and a deeper appreciation\, of the landscape as a whole. The book shares both the enthusiasm and the learning that developed during that journey. \n  \n  \n\nThursday 10th March\nMarsden Mechanics\nDoors Open 7pm\nEvent Starts 7.30 pm\nLicensed Bar\n\nThis is a free event\, but you do need to book a ticket. If you would like to make a donation to support our work that would be greatly appreciated\, there is an option when reserving your ticket. \n\nBook Your Ticket
