SUMMARY:Author Event: Normally Weird & Weirdly Normal - Robin Ince
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets (£10/£8) \nIt’s a HUGE pleasure once again to welcome Robin Ince to Marsden\, with his latest book\, ‘Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal’. \nJoin us in the Mechanics for what’s sure to be a fast-paced\, humorous and insightful conversation about Robin’s own experience of neurodiversity.  There’ll be time to buy books\, and chat to Robin – and you’ll be able to get a copy of the paperback ahead of its official publication date of 30 April – EXCLUSIVE! \nA powerful\, personal exploration of anxiety\, ADHD and neurodiversity\, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal reminds us all – no matter how weird we feel – that it’s okay to be a little different. We all are. \nWhat if being a bit weird is actually entirely normal? What if sharing our internal struggles wasn’t a sign of weakness\, but strength? \nFor over thirty years\, award-winning broadcaster and comedian Robin Ince has entertained thousands in person and on air. But underneath the surface\, a whirlwind was at play – a struggle with sadness\, concentration\, self-doubt and near-constant anxiety. But then he discovered he had all the hallmarks of ADHD and his stumbling blocks became stepping stones. \nIn Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal\, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the neurodivergent experience and to ask what the point of “being normal” really is. Packed with personal insights\, intimate anecdotes and interviews with psychologists\, neuroscientists and many neurodivergent people he has met along the way\, this is a quirky and witty dive into the world of human behaviour. \n£10/£8 \n17th April\nDoors: 7pm\nEvent: 7.30pm – 8.30pm \nOn sale now – book online

SUMMARY:Author Event: An Evening with Sally O'Reilly
DESCRIPTION:Join us with author Sally O’Reilly: \nHagtale \nA Macbeth Origin Story \nSally O’Reilly \nShortlisted for the World of Books’ Sustainable Story Award 2026. \nA hagtale\, a dark fable\, a story told around winter’s fires and known to Shakespeare but never written down. Until now. \nIn the eleventh century\, a feral child is taken in by three witches after the wolves who cared for her are slaughtered by hunters. Raised in the forests amongst nature and magic\, she is soon sent to live in a Scottish castle\, where she falls under the spell of the cruel\, ambitious Lord Macbeth. \nThree hundred years later\, gentle\, observant Brother Rowan makes his way through the land on a strange and perilous quest. Travelling North to a remote and ancient monastery\, Rowan is sent in search of an ancient library and the true history of Scotland’s Kings. \nMisfits in their own time\, Wulva and Rowan are deeply connected despite the centuries that separate them. Each searching for answers\, each in danger from discovering the truth. \nWeaving together across the centuries\, the stories of Rowan and of the child grown into a woman\, lady\, and queen will meet in thunder\, lightning\, and rain\, at Cawdor Castle – at the throne of Macbeth. \nHagtale is a spine-tingling novel which breathes new life into Shakespeare’s tragedy and the concept of literary retellings. Interrogating the play’s magic and masculinity through a new focus on how stories are preserved and lost over time\, this is historical literary fiction at its finest. \nSally O’Reilly grew up in Stoke-on-Trent and now lives in Sheffield. En route\, she’s spent time in Brixton\, Brighton and Barcelona. Her short stories have been published in the UK\, Australia\, and South Africa\, and she has been shortlisted for the Cosmopolitan short story prize and the Ian St. James Awards. Her historical novel Dark Aemilia (Myriad Editions/Picardor US) was nominated for the Kirkus Prize. She has worked as a senior creative writing lecturer at the Open University\, and her journalism has been published in The Guardian\, The Sunday Times\, and New Scientist.

SUMMARY:Author Event: An Evening with Adelle Stripe
DESCRIPTION:A bedroom dreamer with a headful of Warhol\, Adelle Stripe’s formative years were ones of daytime drinking and religious fervour\, frustrated mothers and reckless daughters\, desire\, ambition and the pursuit of creativity. Told through a prism of vintage perfumes and played out in vivid detail with startling clarity and colour\, her memoir Base Notes chronicles an unbridled Northern England of the late 20th century already fading from view. \nWith a keen eye for the absurd\, an ear cocked to eavesdropped conversations and a nose that finds perfume wherever it goes\, this tragicomic tale of working-class womanhood is no clichéd story of redemption or escape\, but instead a bleakly funny\, unflinching account of dead-end jobs\, lost weekends\, brief encounters and those wild\, forgotten characters who slip through the cracks. \nInfused with acerbic observations and unexpected poignancy\, Base Notes sees Adelle Stripe boldly laying her lived experience on the page\, creating literature from a life less ordinary. \n‘A small\, bleak masterpiece’ — Observer  \n‘Wistful\, sad and funny’ — Spectator \n‘Ingenious’ — ★★★★★ Telegraph Books of the Year \n‘Poignant and grimly hilarious’ — DAZED \n‘Candid and compelling’ — Guardian  \nOn Sale Soon – £3

Their connection is instant and powerful. Yet as their feelings deepen\, Renzo’s past in Mussolini’s Italy remains a mystery. \nAs Blackshirts march across the city\, Rose is drawn to the fight against fascism\, even as she’s compelled to face the devastating question – just which side is Renzo on? \nCarolyn O’Brien is an historical fiction writer from Manchester. SUMMARY:Author Event: An Evening with Alison Twells
DESCRIPTION:Perfectly timed for International Women’s Day 2027 \nA Place of Dreams: Desire\, Deception and a Wartime Coming of Age – Alison Twells \n  \nNorah Hodgkinson (1925-2009) was a working-class schoolgirl\, later clerical worker\, and a prolific diarist. In 1940\, at the age of 14\, she knitted a pair of socks for the Royal Navy Comforts Fund. The sailor who received them wrote to thank her\, drawing Norah into a mysterious ‘love triangle’ and an experience that we would now call sexual grooming. \n  \nWhen Norah died in 2009\, Alison Twells – her great niece and a professional historian – received a suitcase archive containing Norah’s 71 pocket diaries\, a collection of photographs and the sailor’s letters. In A Place of Dreams\, Alison explores the coming-of-age of an ordinary girl in wartime and uncovers a dark tale of male rivalry\, wartime anonymity and a young woman’s appetite for life and love amidst unexpected dangers. \nTickets on Sale Soon – £3
