DESCRIPTION:28th January is the Chinese New Year. \n2017 is the Year of the Rooster. \nJoin us for a Family Fun Day in Marsden Mechanics Main Hall. \nThe lovely family from ‘Fu Lin’ will be cooking Chinese food and a very special Chinese New Year cake . Also Chinese calligraphy\, fortune cookie lucky dip\, dancers from Miss Bernie’s school of dancing\, mask making and decorating the dragon for the dragon dance. Children from both schools in Marsden will soon be hearing about an art competition to celebrate 2017-The Year of the Rooster. \nDonations of cakes to raise funds for the Library would be very welcome. \nAre you a Rooster?  As well as 2017\, Roosters were born in 1921\, 1933\, 1945\, 1957\, 1969\, 1981\, 1993 and 2005. \nRoosters should be more careful in years of the Rooster as the year of your birth-sign is said to be the least lucky in the 12 year cycle. \nRoosters are observant\, hard-working\, resourceful\, courageous and talented\, with plenty of self-confidence. \nRead more about the Chinese Year of the Rooster

MWOL regular Sue Salmon has kindly suggested two options: ‘Hats and Gloves’ and ‘Season’s Greetings’. Does your cat wear a hat? Is it as wide as the Quangle Wangle’s? Can your millinery help you to see in the dark (Goya’s could!)? \n\nPerhaps you’d prefer to bring something in a festive vein\, like this cheery couplet from Hilaire Belloc: \n\nMay all my enemies go to hell\,\nNoel\, Noel\, Noel\, Noel. \n(Lines For A Christmas Card\, Hilaire Belloc) \n\n…or something lovelier\, to bring this bewildering year to a close: \n\nNot only for the way the whisky \nflames in the glass and thaws the blood; \nnot only for the rattle of hailstones \ndown the chimney and doused by fire; \nnot just for the way the brand-new ring\, \nslipped cool on a finger\, flushes with life; \nor the warmth of the bed\, and the warmth of another\, \nwhen streetlamps are spinning snow outside. \n\nBut also for the good\, true cold\, \nshocking us back to all our senses: \nthe broken-off star of ice in the hand\, \nthe sting of the wind and the quickening heart. \nFor the splintering light\, and the frost in our voices\, \nstriking\, and making the strung air ring; \nDecember cold with its wilder gifts – \nfor when are we more alive than now? \n(‘Grace at Christmas’\, Jean Sprackland) \n\nAs ever\, the theme is entirely optional and we welcome every ‘Bah\, humbug!’. \n  \nFrom our Correspondent: Julian Jordan reviews an evening of poetry in Washington: \nA week after the shock of America’s supposed liberal values being trumped by bigly bigotry\, the country’s apparently ingrained red neck having been thus exposed\, I had the privilege of attending an extraordinarily apposite evening at Washington’s The Phillips Collection\, with poets Robin Coste Lewis and Tyehimba Jess responding to the gallery’s exhibition: People on The Move: Beauty And Struggle in Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series.
