SUMMARY:A Wilding Year\, Hannah Dale - with Huddersfield Literature Festival
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an illustrated talk from Hannah Dale\, the artist behind successful stationery and gift design company Wrendale Designs\, about the ambitious rewilding project that she and her husband have undertaken on their 300-acre farm.  \nWhen Hannah and Jack inherited his father’s farm in North Lincolnshire\, they soon realised that the poor soil made it challenging for food production and the perfect candidate for rewilding.  \nIn her new book\, A Wilding Year\, she recounts the remarkable process of restoring the farm’s ecosystems\, creating a mosaic of opportunities for wildlife at a time when the natural world is in great need of protection.  \nHannah will give a talk about the rewilding process and show some of her stunning sketches and illustrations that capture the beauty and power of nature across the seasons.  \nHannah Dale runs Wrendale Designs\, a stationery and gift design company that specialises in endearing illustrations depicting British wildlife\, which she founded in 2012. Hannah grew up in rural Lincolnshire which has always inspired her watercolour illustrations. Studying art at school before reading zoology at Cambridge\, she went on to work as a stockbroker in London before returning to Lincolnshire to find an outlet for her artistic roots and passion for ecology and conservation. Hannah’s previous books include: A Dog’s Life\, The Farmyard Set\, Born to be Wild\, The Young Ones and Flying the Nest.  \n\n15th May\nDoors: 6.30pm\nEvent: 7pm – 8pm\nBar\, Refreshments\, Signing\n\nTickets from Huddersfield Literature Festival

SUMMARY:Stella Halkyard - Library Lives: A Bookworm's Lifelong Love of Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Q: What do all these have in common? \n\nWilliam Wordsworth’s hair\nMarcel Proust’s hair\nMrs Gaskell’s sewing scissors\nThe lining of Walt Whitman’s hat\nDelia Derbyshire’s wartime gas mask\n\nA: You can find them all in the collections of the John Rylands Library in Manchester! \nStella Halkyard will read from and discuss her book\, Library Lives\, described by the TLS as ‘a small\, eloquent treasury’\,’a fitting tribute to the breadth and eclectism of the Rylands’. \nRead the TLS Review \nDate: Thursday 3rd April\nDoors Open: 7.00 pm\nEvent:  7.30 – 8.30 pm \nFREE: booking required.  Please visit Marsden Library or book here to reserve your seats. \nLibrary Lives plots the lifelong love affair between one particular bookworm and the John Rylands Library in Manchester\, its collections drawn from every corner and period of the  world. \nStella Halkyard studied English at the University of Newcastle\, History of Art at the University of Manchester\, and Archive Studies at the University of Liverpool. She was the Joint Head of Special Collections at the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester where she curated its Modern Literary Archives\, Art\, Photography and Object Collections for many years. \nAs a curator\, she was responsible for the endless classifying\, documenting\, and describing that brings alive library collections.  Over the last two decades\, her popular ‘Pictures from a Library’ and ‘Archive Corner’ features published in PN Review told the life stories of these and many other fascinating objects. \nNow\, the objects and their stories are brought together in Library Lives\, unlocking the vibrancy of the Ryland’s collections for a new generation of readers\, enabling them to discover the richness of its contents and take them on their own readerly and writerly adventures.

DESCRIPTION:Why play to 12\,000 people when you can play to 12? (or\, ideally\, 40: maximum capacity in Marsden Library!)\nWe’re delighted to have Robin back again this year to talk about the book that came out of his 2021 tour\, Bibliomaniac. \nPacked with witty anecdotes and tall tales\, Bibliomaniac takes the reader on a journey across Britain as Robin explores his lifelong love of bookshops and books (and Libraries\, natch)  – and also tries to find out just why he can never have enough of them. It is the story of an addiction and a romance\, and also of an occasional points failure just outside Oxenholme. \nOur friends at Read in Holmfirth will be along to sell books – and they even feature in Biblbiomaniac having hosted Robin in Holmfirth – and Robin will be happy to sign. \nThis event will take place in our small-but-beautiful\, Library – meaning tickets are strictly limited!  On Sale on Wednesday 5th April from Marsden Mechanics – make a note in your diary! \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Rob Vincent\, 'Colne Valley\, A History of a Pennine Landscape'
DESCRIPTION:Join Rob Vincent in the historic Marsden Mechanics Hall for a talk based on his book ‘Colne Valley: A History of a Pennine Landscape’. \nThis book is a tribute to the visual strengths of the Colne Valley’s landscape and a narrative of its development. It is inspired by the author’s experience of living for over 30 years in a house whose built form reflects the Valley’s centuries-long dual economy of domestic cloth making and small-scale farming\, and whose stones were quarried from the hillside where it stands. From affection for his family home at Harts Hole grew a wider understanding\, and a deeper appreciation\, of the landscape as a whole. The book shares both the enthusiasm and the learning that developed during that journey. \n  \n  \n\nThursday 10th March\nMarsden Mechanics\nDoors Open 7pm\nEvent Starts 7.30 pm\nLicensed Bar\n\nThis is a free event\, but you do need to book a ticket.
